25 June 2008 - Washington Post Architecture Critic Philip Kennicott explores the forests of new buildings springing up in every corner of Beijing, from blue chip projects such as the CCTV tower to the workers' sheds that are probably the most common structure in the Chinese capital.(video by Travis Fox / washingtonpost.com. • What contradictions? This gap of misunderstanding between the west and China is dangerous. Huaxia is awaken. The civilization that gave birth to Japan, Korea, China, and Vietnam. Architecture will come as a matter of time. The destruction of Hu-tongs and Beijing is part of the process of China rediscovering its roots.

  • I felt an ominous feeling in this video. I agree with your thoughts about the contradictions in china. The extremes. But isn't this only symptomatic of great change? I was in Beijing for 3 weeks in June 2008 for work and I did get to see some of the architecture that is new. But my impression of all the architecture that is new is massive, almost intimidating. No human scale. There is nothing old about the new architecture in china. It is vibrant, confident and a bugle call to the world.

  • "Blah blah blah China is authoritarian all its buildings are symbols of forced order, soldiers and vigilance. Government does not like a screen the size of a football field, not because it's a road hazard, but because Chinese government is evil and hates everything. duh. The West is the best and we make good buildings and our architects telepathically communicate to each other about how to make the best buildings ever." -this video in a nutshell.

  • the most disgusting town beiping

  • 1:41 worker's housing is China's reality because most people are not rich. 2:24 CCTV tower portends fatal arrogance - an attempt to dominate nature. 3:16 Ministry of Transportation is an example of a Stalin wedding cake (with faux Chinese roof corners). 4:53 National Theater is a titanium egg - metal in Feng Shui reflects strength & communication, while water reflects motion. New Chinese architecture seems to reflect a resolution to forge ahead and to not look back.

  • Irony and sarcasm won't help you from disclosing your stupidity. I choose to ignore you. You don't show any interest in this issue.
