INDONESIA SOUTH KOREA DEFENSE(한국 잠수함 첫 수출‥사상 최대 규모)

Indonesia and South Korea pledged on Friday to strengthen their collaboration in developing military equipment as Jakarta's defence minister Purnomo Yusgiantoro hosted his counterpart Kim Kwan Jin.

'We learn from Korea how to be independent. There is no such thing as a strong country if its defence industry is not strong,' Mr Yusgiantoro said, adding the partnership was solid because Seoul was 'sincere in its transfer of technology'.

Indonesia agreed in July to join a South Korean project to develop fighter jets.

It has also chosen South Korea as preferred bidder for its T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer jet project, despite a reported attempt by Seoul's spies to steal secrets from the project from a visiting Jakarta delegation in February.
