I don't believe in psychiatry because the origin of the word has a now-defunct connotation which I disagree with? Wow.

Anthony's talk was great...he (and several of the other speakers) really deserved better questions from the audience.

His answer to the Iranian guy's questions unfortunately wasn't that good. He should have said something like western governments put economic and political pressure on theocracies to secularize and respect human rights; non-theocracies should tax religions, stop wars, promote education, skeptic's groups online, demand the right of free speech, repeal all blasphemy laws worldwide, etc. He didn't say any strategies he just reaffirmed the need to get religion out of public policy which we all know.

Where? The 'new law' within the Patriot Act deeds that none exists(at least outside American Indian lands)...The "Patriot Act" is totally -as far as I can[and may] see- ...theocratically nil!

@SittingMooseShaman Becasue the theistic is seen as a threat to the benefits of secular society. The rational are not in a neutral position, but in conflict with theocratic encroachment into the public domain.

...coming together over...nothing. Why? If a god-entity does not exist...the only point I can see in attending such a convention...is the food...seein' th' sights around town...an' getting laid back in my hotel room. This is not "atheism". It is anti-religious organisation-ism...

When nothing deistic exists...why bother w/the expenses and inconvenience of all this pomposity as...well, over nothing. Nil. Nyet. Nada. Nicht. Empty "space": We simply exist.

Psychiatry based on empiricism? Cognitive behavioural therapy. Study unwanted behaviours, determine the thought patterns that lead to said behaviours, attempt to change thought patterns, collect evidence for effectiveness. If said intervention is ineffective, adopt a different model.

I love when these people get their hopes up to ask these utterly inane questions of very well educated people and get shafted. I wish more people would speak up and get embarrassed about their irrational beliefs- it might help them to improve their outlook.
