A few words from the author:

"The song is called "Adam Ant alone in his padded cell". Its supposed to be along the lines of "Cold Kisses" by Richard Thompson - a song that sounds like its supposed to be funny from the opening line and then develops into something more sad and serious having hooked you in. Not a piss take then.

"I think the idea came from a Guardian article about songs referencing other bands, and in particular the title of the Smog song "Prince alone in his studio" (I've still not actually heard the song - I just liked the title). Joking around with an English equivalent I came up with my title and immediately started humming what I thought the song would sound like - it's obviously a waltz from the internal rhythm of the title, and the sequential/scalic melody made it sound like a nursery rhyme so that was in from the beginning. I did some research to get all the facts in the song right - looked up the newspaper reports and the interviews he did afterwards. I wanted to point out that whatever might happen, he was still the biggest pop star in the country for a period and you can't take that away. Using the "ridicule is nothing to be scared of" line was too good to be true. Then I expanded on what else could be going on - "Marco and Merrick were worried when they heard the news; Gary and Terry Lee, they should have seen it coming too" wrote itself. Finally, the title of the play "Jeffrey Bernard Is Unwell" by Keith Waterhouse stuck in my head (again, I've never seen the play but I liked the title). At the time he had the breakdown Adam Ant was due to headline an 80s variety tour with Katrina and the Waves and Altered Images, so I liked the idea of the posters at each venue reading "Adam Ant is unwell"."

~Lyrics~

Adam Ant alone in his padded cell
All alone after a dizzy spell
As the mist rolls down into the night
And the desk sergeant turns out the light

He went to Kentish town in to a public house
And he raised his voice waving his gun about
When the police man came to take him away
And charged adam ant with affray

They can't take away the wisdom he gave us
That ridicule is nothing to be afraid of

Adam Ant alone in his padded cell
Casts his mind the stories that he could tell
The things he'd seen in all his career
As the king of the wild frontier

And Marco and Merrick were worried when they heard the news
Gary and Terry Lee they should've seen it coming too
But there was nothing that they could do

Adam Ant alone in his padded cell
In a darkened room primrose hill
So Adam wont be appearing today
'Cos Adam Ant is unwell

I'm only guessing, however I feel the negative comments are coming from the fact that those people many not have taken the time to read the lyrics. Sadly, and maybe why YouTube is so popular, is that people don't want to have to take the time to read.

I think the lyrics are very sad but, alas, true. I think you did a very nice job.

And I AM a fan of Adam and the Ants.

  • nice of you to say so

i think im just gonna leave this one alone from now on

  • also i should say that i am not jim moray so i cant really speak on his behalf

  • omg i hate this poor adam ant not nice to take the piss he is lovely and he been though so much antfan2000

  • its not meant to be a piss take i dont think

    at least i hope not

  • The title of the video makes it sound like it might be a pisstake, but I'm pretty sure it isn't. It's called 'Adam Ant is Unwell' I think.

Anyway, I love this song. It's so melancholic.

  • i thought so too but its definately adam ant alone in his padded cell

  • This is a tribute, not a pisstake.

Jim Moray. This album is awesome.

I saw him live two nights ago.

  • Give this guy a break...it's a fucking tribute, if you were even paying attention!!! He TAUGHT that, ridicule is nothing to be afraid of...so, then...why would he NOT be honored that we were all paying attention? Refer to the track: "Prince Charming", Einstein!! Gee whiz...take a chill pill>>>>>>>GREAT SONG, DUDE!!!

  • I love Adam Ant, I love Jim Moray, I've been sectioned myself for severe depression, and I love this song.

Try and think about what a lot of folk songs actually are. They're tales of notorious individuals which have been become heavily romanticized and dramatized as they pass from person to person. When you listen to this, imagine it's just that. If you understand what he's doing you'll realize it's NOT a pisstake.

  • Ah put the tears away Adam is just great now. Looking sexier then ever and sounding fab. What a guy he has risen to his beautiful former self :-). To keep all his Antpeople happy. What a Star x x katie

  • Hi! i'm a lucky frAntchpeople (stop lauguing!) and i got something in common with Adam. I don't understand the entires lyrics of that song, but u know the stuff: music's universal language. IN F rance nobody never gives a shit about adam, so it wont starts now!Murray seems to sing sadly . Do u ever feel sad for adam? I do. Sometimes u try to do your best to thank and tribute for someone u really care. If u don't even try shut the f up and stay where u are, we don't need u . Antmusic.

  • I've been an Ant fan for 30 years, and perhaps the writer of this song had best intentions,....but it's crap. If he really wanted to make a tribute, he could atleast put in some burundi,..

  • i actually cried, this is beautiful.

i sort of agree with feltwood when they say "nobody likes to be reminded of themselves at their worst" but you have to remember adam is very open minded about his illness and he encourages anyone and everyone with mental health problems to speak up because they're not alone.

  • I love how this is like the only song on the album with comments, and it's full of fan boy faggots bashing it. You guys ought to go find yourselves a life, really. It's the internet, but don't let it fool you - you opinion is worthless, just like mine.

  • I think he's fine.

I met him a few weeks ago. He was stressed as lots of equipment hadn't arrived, but seemed in perfectly good mental health.

  • a load of shit..... I agree with antmania. Please re-record this track with the new suggested ending!

  • The song has good intentions and interesting that the padded cell doesn't refer to Adam being locked up literally but that he felt like he was in a padded cell during his awful illness, much like Pink Floyd's The Wall imagry.

I would dearly have loved the song to end with Adam Ant is no longer unwell as Adam is clearly much much better healthwise these days and planning new material and concert tours.
