Ya at 25/30 you still have mostly yellow/green towers with SOME red. You should really upgrade earlier.
Once the maze is like 75% complete, start saving resources. Somewhere around lvl 8-12 you can find a nice 2-3 levels where you don't have to build or upgrade anything. And let the interest compound exponentially.
Then you can pump out 4-6 red towers and finish your maze.

Definitely a good idea. But like Reniux, I would upgrade much more much earlier.
Also a good idea to get a command. When I beat it I had a rank 2 command on lvl 7 or 8. I was rolling in the dough after that.
Your maze was superior to mine tho. Very nice
