I spoke with Meg years ago about this song. It was written very quickly and she didn't think Chrissie would like it. She did like it though and called Meg in the middle of the night so she could hear the final version over the phone. Meg was amazed and thrilled.

Btw, the song as it was written was about menstruation. That's what was on Meg's mind when she wrote it. She told me that. At the time of the recording she was living at Eastwind Community in Missouri. Check it out. It's true.

Its a dig at Michael Jackson. At the time she admitted to being very influenced by Prince, she says in the song: "Millions of kids are looking at you, you say 'let them drink soda pop'" referencing MJ's deal with Pepsi.

it's a different song to be sure but, as a HUGE Pretenders fan, you have to see that her classic kick ass, I don't give an F attitude is still there, just in a different way. And you can't find on youtube cause WMG will take it down in less than three minutes, check my page

One of my favourite songs, not written by Chrissie, it's a goddess song, bet the writer flipped when she heard the album version from Get Close

When "how much didja" came out I felt it was about Michael as an example too.

"chill factor" off get close was political, and it totally rocks

bootlegs are fun, but the version on Get Close is astounding.. mixed by Bob Clearmountain, check it out if you like this for sure

...Remember, the song was written in 1986 before musicians got into giant marketing deals with corporations and that kind of activity was seen as dangerous to the music industry by "purists" like Chrissie.

Today, no one thinks anything about a band getting into a marketing deal with a company. Pearl Jam is teaming with Target. But back in 1986, it was totally unheard of and seen as a sign of the "corporatization" of music.

You probably don't find it on YT because no one has uploaded it because it's not a very good song. There are a lot of Pretenders songs not on YT.

The song is her attempt to get political. There are a couple of other songs on "Get Close" that are political too.

"How Much..." is a rant against musicians who sell out and most people at that time thought she was speaking directly about Michael Jackson an his Pepsi deal....

I have always respected the Pretenders but was shocked by the lyrics to "How much did you get for your soul" that I just heard for the first time. I would be so happy if a Pretenders fan could explain to me. I suppose there is a reason you can't find the song here on youtube.
