john holden is a casting genius.the reason you dont believe he casts so far is because he does it without any effort at all.if you watch paul kerry cast he has a very quick pendulum and you can see the effort he puts into the cast wheras john holden has a very laid back style which seems effortless when compared to pauls style.both styles of pendulum work equally well.its all a matter of working out your own method.alternatively just buy a 16ft rod and cast 150yds with bait without even trying.

I wish the cast did happen that slowly tho', might be able to do more than six on the trot without feeling like my arms had been ripped out of their sockets.

My thoughts exactly, but I have chucked over 150 without a Pendulum.... & this guy is a casting legend, so it probably was.

I'm guessing that you mean an open-face spinning reel? If so, you can certainly pendulum cast with one. It is very important to lock the spool and protect your finger before casting hard, otherwise you'll probably cut yourself on the line.

It's actually a great question that bothers a lot of beginners. Letting go of the reel is like letting go of a ball when you throw it - it just happens. You naturally let go at the right time. Good thing really, because if you didn't the cast would escape anyway and you'd be left with a burned thumb or a cut finger. A cast wanting to get away TOO EARLY is the problem - it is a symptom of something wrong in your method.
