Ukrainian politicians are optimistic that Ukraine will join NATO in the near future. This comes after Ukraine was banned from NATO at Bucharest this April.
STORY:
Ukrainian politicians remain optimistic about joining NATO despite being rejected membership in Brussels. Officials hope to develop a national program that will help them join NATO.
Former foreign minister of Ukraine, Borys Tarasjuk, believes the plan is good for Ukraine and implies that it is still working together with NATO.
[Borys Tarasjuk, Head of the Committee of European Integration]:
"Ukraine suffered a defeat because it didn't get membership but won the strategic war. This is what has happened in Brussels from the Russian's point of view."
Tarasjuk also said NATO is considering cooperation from Ukraine as a positive step that the country will be in NATO sooner or later.
Member of Ukrainian Parliament Anatoliy Grytsenko had developed his own NATO membership plan when he was the Secretary of Defense. In his opinion Ukraine will join NATO only after the living standards in the country have been raised.
[Anatoliy Grytsenko, Member of Ukrainian Parliament]:
"To improve the economy, living standards, to establish proper legal proceedings, to restrain corruption, to put into place checks and balances, which is used four times more than NATO countries. To put in order the force structures, put them under control and not to politicize them, as we can see it now, and to guarantee normal fair trial."
Grytsenko believes it is important that people support Ukraine becoming a member of NATO. He things Ukraine has to hold a referendum on this issue.
A survey from The Transformation of Society Institute in Ukraine says two thirds of Ukrainians are against becoming part of NATO.
[Lillia Kolomiets, Retired]:
"I don't support foreign military on our territory. I don't support NATO because I have a grandchild."
[Petro Shablovskiy, Lieutenant General]:
"Ukrainians don't need NATO, because it will bring unemployment. We have to be friends, not with NATO but with Russians."
[Anatoliy Sidorov, Metrologist]:
"Ukrainian political position is rather low in the world, so our position in NATO should we join will be very low."
On the other hand many Ukrainians support Ukraine in NATO.
[Yuriy Krutov, Businessman]:
"I don't like the danger from out East neighbor. We saw its aggressiveness in Georgia. And Crimea - it could become another flashpoint in the future."
[Maria Begoyeva, Journalist]:
"They will give us money for the development of the Ukrainian army. And also we will gain certain safety from an alliance which will defend Ukraine. And maybe Russia wouldn't put so much pressure on us with the gas matter."
[Zapolskaya Aliona, Journalist]:
"Ukraine has to become the member of the European Union, and without NATO this is impossible."
Experts say Ukraine it will not be possible for it to become a member of NATO until 2011.
