BlackTree TV Hostess Farai Gundan covers the African Diaspora Presidential Inaugural Ball.

Red carpet! Live Entertainment from the Diaspora! Open bar! And a great cause! Join us for The African Diaspora Inaugural Ball—an elegant, black-tie event featuring class, culture, and a great cause. On Sunday, January 18th 2009, the luxurious, brand new, 800-seat Harman Center for the Arts in downtown Washington, DC will be filled with exquisite food, an open bar, and live entertainment by some of the Diasporas brightest stars including an all womens Brazilian drumming group, an energetic East African Dance troupe and a live South African band.

Confirmed artists include Grammy-award nominated sultry, singing sensation, LES NUBIANS with a live performance, and a special guest appearance by Grammy Award winner and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, ANGELIQUE KIDJO. In addition, you can expect VIP's from the entertainment, political, humanitarian and business worlds—not to mention red-carpet treatment. This phenomenal event will celebrate the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama and the accomplishments of African diaspora communities in the United States. One of our featured speakers will be Dr. Witney Schneidmn

Our theme—I AM THE CHANGE: Educating, Empowering and Engaging the Next Generation of Leaders,—highlights the importance of investing in the education and empowerment of the next generation. 100% of proceeds will go to: Angelique Kidjos Batonga Foundation, ensuring that the organization is able to continue its outreach to children throughout Africa; and First Book, a nonprofit organization that provides new books to children in low income communities. Log on to www.AD4change.org for regular updates and to find out about sponsorship opportunities.

  • lol say what u will. u still have a black prez dude.

  • When JFK was elected Irish people across the world were happy not because he's gonna become their president but they were all prud of his accomplishment. This is the same way Africans feel today. We know Obama is American President. Besides, Africa is a continent and not a country.

  • African people are SO cool! :D

  • Obama the first half-caste biracial mixed-race president not black

  • MAN, i used to be expert in this dance back in the days in school in Uganda..lol. loved it.

  • love love love the African spirit.... :-)

  • Third: The material worn, kikoyi, is not from any part of Africa. It comes from India. Since then there are variations from this original.

Fourth: Bakisimba, muwogola, nakasa, mbaga all come from Buganda. Do you know which were performed by the male dancer?

  • First: There are only two people on that stage that were born on this continent and they are Ugandan by heritage. The rest were born in Uganda and with the exception of one member are Baganda (look it up).

Second: There are no "men" or "women" steps except when they are greeting. And for you who claim to know what the bakisimba dance is, I don't need to explain.

  • yes, this is a ugandan tribes traditional dance.

  • lol how overrated is it that your president shares the same tribe as me lol it sure is overrated hahahah
