A sari or saree is the traditional Hindu female garment in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka.[1] It is also still worn in Pakistan by some women. A sari is a very long strip of unstitched cloth, ranging from four to nine metres in length, which can be draped in various styles. The most common style is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with one end then draped over the shoulder baring the midriff.[1] The sari is usually worn over a petticoat (pavada/pavadai in the south, and shaya in eastern India), with a blouse known as a choli or ravika forming the upper garment. The choli has short sleeves and a low neck and is usually cropped, and as such is particularly well-suited for wear in the sultry South Asian summers. Cholis may be "backless" or of a halter neck style. These are usually more dressy with a lot of embellishments such as mirrors or embroidery and may be worn on special occasions.Women in the armed forces, when wearing a sari uniform, don a half-sleeve shirt tucked in at the waist.

  • I've only recently discovered the sari. I mean, I'd seen it before, but didn't know anything about it. I assumed it was a stitched garment like any western dress.

Instead, I discover that it is a long rectangle, and is amazingly versatile. I am amazed by all that can be done with it. It is one of those rare garments which is fancy without being gaudy, sexy without being slutty, traditional without being obsolete.

  • "A sari or saree is the traditional Hindu female garment" Indian, not Hindu. Saris aren't restricted to a particular religion. =) Nice video.

  • Is it possible to wear a Sari without a petticoat?

  • Hey, I heard about this product called Sari Saheli pleatmaker which is a tool to tie your pleats and palla. So, if you are a amateur like me and dont know how to wear a saree, just order this Pleatmaker machine from sarisaheli website and draping a saree becomes so much easier. The also have magnetic clips to hold the saree on their website which completely replace those safety pins which poke our hands and sarees. I really works, try it !!!!!
