I agree completely and putting non-recycleable batteries and charging systems into our cars reduces emmisions but does not reduce overall pollution. Wierd. I am all for hybrid increase of performance, but the best way to good gas mileage is 100% electric, although I am waiting to see the new Subaru 2.5L diesel next year!

I'm not saying hybrids are a joke per se, but it all depends what you do with the technology. What happens now is that they get optimized for performance, not for emissions or mileage. Used like that, it is indeed a gas-guzzling joke with a big rainbow button on it. The same happened with german diesels. Diesels now are just as fast as petrol cars, and get just a bit lower mileage. The same engineering effort could have been used for low-emission cars, but that still doesn't sell enough.
