John Martin Meek was given an exclusive interview with Sir Edmund Hillary, first person to summit Mt. Everest, highest point on earth, about his upcoming 50th anniversary of this great achievement on May 29, 1953. The interview was conducted Sept. 3, 2002, at the Hillary home in Auckland, New Zealand, for Meek's collection of video interviews with noted climbers done exclusively for the American Alpine Club Library in Golden, Colorado

  • Sir Ed did not take my question as disrepectfully. He took it as someone who had done a lot of research and found in various places that the foto he took of Norgay often was mistakenly identified as him in books and otherwise. The point was to verify there was not a foto of him on the summit. As I said then, "this speaks volumes about you (and your modesty.) If he had been offended, he would have tole me to leave instead of my staying all day for what was to have been a one-hour session.

  • yeah your right. you made it up in that end bit where you talked about his selflessness. but i guess your write in saying that their wasn't a photo of him. he should've just turned the camera around showed his face with a background of mountains. have you climbed any large mountains? i am from australia by the way.

  • this interviewer is so disrespectable. "is there any photo evidence that you reached the summit"
