The "Palentine"
By Iyad Hayatleh
Translated by Hasan Abu Khalil with the poet
Lovers have roses of their own
and we have passion's blossoms
Lovers have their own poems
and we have our melody of verse
Lovers have their coyness
and we have the Martyr's grace
who offers his beloved
the sacrifice musk of blood
With all the burdens he endures
he never heaves a sigh
and arrives on Love's day
happy as a sand-boy
With the dreams of a lover
and the red flower,
intoxicated
he strides with rapture
to give the first kiss
on shining lips
for an eternal beloved
whom, despite his exile
he will always recall
She is his first and last love,
where he used to voyage
and anchor in the sea of her eyes
lulled by the hands of memory
waiting for good tidings
He arrives on Love's day
happy as a sand-boy
With the dreams of a lover
and the red flower,
and the first kiss
on shining lips
and two shots in the forehead
Halleluiah
So charming is our own Valentine
when celebrated, only, for Palestine
