From the wee small hours of Tuesday 21st August 1984, possibly the best find I shall ever discover from archiving old videotapes (this is from the fabulous Betamax format). Running to almost EIGHT minutes, a complete Grampian Television closedown with Colin Lamont. The other announcer (voice only) is John Jason. Please keep listening to the bitter end...Billy Connolly got it SO right with one of his routines on his 1985 appearance in LWT's An Audience With...
This is one of those occasions where, unfortunately, quantity is better than quality, and although I do have a much better version of this video as an avi file, that amounts to 1.6 gigabytes! ANY AND ALL COPYRIGHTS DUTIFULLY ACKNOWLEDGED.

  • Didn't it changed to "STV"?

  • It did, but not until 2006, although the decision to do so did not go down well with Grampian's viewers.

  • Actually i think that there are some earlier closedowns than this clip and some old invision continuity clips at the grampian studios website .It's a pity they are all stills though !

  • What a wonderful and very in-depth website that is which you refer to, a very comprehensive look at Grampian Television through the years. Even just one or two videos on it would be worth it...

  • I didn't know Grampian were using that look as early as that! I always thought it came in in 1985!

  • Nor me! According to everything I have ever read on-line with regards to Grampian, 1985 has always been the date for that identity starting, although as this was just the endboard attached to the end of the film which had just finished (Innocent Bystanders), perhaps the ident itself which forms into this design was not yet in use...

  • Bilmey! (Sir) Alex Ferguson had joined the late Jock Stein on the Scotland national management team! (Of course, Fergie managed Scotland at the 1986 World Cup after Stein died.) I remember the weather being hot that summer and having to save water - it was the same case down here in the north-west of England where I am! Fascinating news on this closedown!

  • I have just looked at his Wikipedia profile and he was twenty-eight there. He looks ten to twenty years older. Angus Deayton once made the point on "Before They Were Famous", was right about regional presenters from the 1960s to the 1980s looking much older than they actually are.

  • Literally everything about this clip is amazing.

  • After looking at the grampianstudios Youtube channel, I think the clock was indeed introduced in 1983! Also, I think the still ident was also introduced in that year, but the animated one, not until 1985... Also, from 1983-1985, a very 80's synth version of the jingle was used!

  • @VHSsense If you're referring to the CGI Grampian ident, it definitely wasn't. CGI technology wasn't anywhere near that advanced in 82.

  • @DELTIC1976 I think it was adopted in 1982 with the new franchise

  • Good stuff - but what a shame nobody could be bothered to gather any news (other than the top story and the football result) from outside Aberdeen!

  • @callwithcurrentconti The BBC had one or two once upon a time ;)
