Carolina Boogie
(Rap song written in 1987 by Jon Seskevich of the UNC School of Nursing)
We come from Carolina and we're number one.
From the School of Nursing and we have some fun.
Hit the floors there at 8 o'clock.
That's about the time that things begin to rock.
Doing a turn on a psychiatric ward.
Patients there dealing with life untoward.
We got some people there, they can really carry a tune.
We found out in report that three were baying at the moon.
I said we come from Carolina and we have some fun.
From the School of Nursing and we're number one.
A student nurse named Deborah Beverly,
She's a newly wed and as happy as can be.
She boogies with the patients and she really rocks.
Gets them all better with her therapeutic talks.
Another student named Millie Lyon,
The patients all like her cause she's really kind.
Tall and blond and she likes to boogie too.
She'll tell you all about that Carolina blue.
I said we come from Carolina and we have some fun.
From the School of Nursing and we're number one.
The singer of the song and my name is Jon.
When I hit the floors I am really on.
Being a student is so much fun,
Only having one patient, doing one to ones.
Another guy named John Korby,
He's as cool man, as he can be.
They give him hassles! They give him phlegm!
All he says is: "No problem,
We do the walk, we do the hospital walk.
We do the walk, we do the hospital walk."
Shauna, Glenda, Ellen too.
Carrying the load, down on South Two.
Patients love them, rockers all.
Hang out with them and just have a ball.
The teacher of this group she's wearing a smile.
She gives you a feeling she'll go that extra mile.
Sits with the patients. Does what she can.
Everybody knows her and her name is Ann.
I said we come from Carolina and we have some fun.
From the School of Nursing and we're number one.
Bud's the man, with the cam.
You know he's taping these students, just as fast as he can.
He would like to boogie! He would like to rock!
But now he has to sit there and watch us talk.
You get the message and the beat of this song.
After a while, y'all can sing along.
Think of Carolina and think about you too.
Then let it rip for that Carolina Blue.
I said we come from Carolina!
This rap was recorded in the Spring of 1987 with University of North Carolina nursing students. After listening to Run-D.M.C, Jon free styled this rap one day while walking to his psychiatric nursing clinical rotation in Chapel Hill. It is about nursing school, his classmates, their lives and hospital experiences. This video was shot later in the semester for the school's video yearbook. Jon is now a nurse clinician specializing in Stress Management at Duke Hospital and is an adjunct faculty member in the UNC School of Nursing.
is he at the pit in the video? I believe he is but it's hard to tell
