I always felt sorry for Herb Morrison. All he could do was report what he saw. It was too much for him, but his crying on the air is not a minus, it's a plus. A REAL Reporter with REAL Feelings and a REAL Perspective on what happened. He didn't expect what he saw and he gave an OUTSTANDING report from the scene. If he had reported 9/11, he would have the same Human Feelings to show.
Great Job, Herb. You did it RIGHT. Rest In Peace.

Herb Morrison was congratulated for his calm profesionalism in continuing to report even though overcome with emotion.
Urban legends, it takes just 30 seconds to disprove them. Why do people keep repeating them?

I always wondered why his voice sounded so high and weird.

Obviously the airship wasn't filled with pure hydrogen-- just enough to give it sufficient lift that it could be operated safely at a steady altitude. The heat was up and away from most survivors, and was more along the lines of opening up a very hot oven-- you'd feel it, all right, but alone it wouldn't kill you.

Yeah, but if it's true that hydrogen burns at 2,318 degrees centigrade, it's amazing that the heat alone didn't kill everyone.

That's right. He says, "The words stuck in my throat. A sob wanted to replace them. A gulp or two quashed the sob, which metamorphosed into tears forming in the corners of my eyes. I fought back the emotion and regained my professionalism, but it was touch and go there for a few seconds before I could continue."

I have the full audio version. It starts out with him telling all about him and his crew coming to Lakehurst for the landing, in his normal smooth velvet Peter Allen-like delivery. And they flew on American Airlines! he says about 6 times. Gee, I wonder who the sponsor was. Anyway, want it? Jay

About two-thirds of those aboard were in the gondola, which was shielded from the flames and had a wheel with a giant shock absorber on it. The crash wasn't going to kill them, and as long as they were in any condition to haul ass away from fiery debris (most were), and did so, they were always going to survive. It was those in the interior who didn't make it out alive, for the most part. Few survivors, those aboard and ground crew, were completely unscathed, however.
