Action Medical Research is supporting the development of a new seat design for severely disabled children like five-year-old Riley, who appears in this film.

Who could this chair help?

This chair is being specifically designed to help very severely disabled children who suffer from uncontrollable spasms. This makes standard seating extremely uncomfortable for them. It could help children with conditions such as dystonic cerebral palsy.

Is this chair currently available, either privately or on the NHS?

No, the design of the chair is still under development and this will take a number of years to complete. It is this work that is currently being supported by funding from Action Medical Research.

When will the chair be available?

Although pilot work has been completed, it will take a number of years to refine the design.

How much will it cost and will it be available on the NHS?

These issues could only be decided once closer to production. We are some years away from this.

What is Action Medical Researchs involvement in this seating project?

Action Medical Research funds medical research projects at hospitals and universities around the UK. We are currently funding the research teams that are working on this particular project. The charity does not provide funding for individuals or sell or supply equipment.

Please be prepared -- Riley's story offers real hope but some may find it upsetting
