The org-domain was one of the original top-level domains, established in January 1985, originally intended for use by organizations that did not meet the requirements for other gTLDs. Now anyone can register an org-domain.

The org-domain, which has come to be associated with noncommercial organizations, is the Internet's fifth largest top-level domain, housing over 5 million domain names worldwide.

ICANN has decided to take the org-domain from Network Solutions and to give it to a third party.PIR was selected by ICANN to manage the org-registry, and is committed to setting a new standard for registry services in its management of org-domains that will meet the unique needs and interests of noncommercial organizations around the world.

The org-domain is occasionally associated with the open source/free software movement, as opposed to the com-domains used mostly by companies. While it is true that many open source projects use org-domains (OpenOffice.org even has it in the product name), most org-domains do not qualify for this generalization, as the idea is not about software, but rather that the organization is likely to be a non profit one.

Other top-level domains such as com-domains or net-domains are associated with commercial business, but the org-domain means "noncommercial" to the vast majority of Internet users. Therefore, any organization whose primary focus is noncommercial, such as philanthropic and cultural institutions; foundations; health services; religious, civic, arts, social and fraternal organizations; social and legal services; and clubs and community volunteer groups, should have a org-domain and org-website. In addition, corporations should consider using the org-domain for charitable activities and to protect their name; the site then can be redirected to the com-domain or net-domain.

The org-domain brand provides: * Trust: the org-domain conveys credibility. It is the home of groups that people turn to for trusted information, guidance and support. * Valuable, well-intentioned: websites with org-domains are known for containing valuable information and for representing worthwhile causes. * fundraising potential: customers, who owns org-domains, report that having a site with an .org extension is best for online fundraising. * Targeting: The vast majority of Internet users associate "nonprofit" with the org-domain web sites.

But: In spite of the historic background as a domain for non-profit organizations there are no restrictions. Anybody can register org-domains.

# IDNs
You can register now org-domains with German Umlaut like ä,ö,ü. Since July 2005 the registry of org-domains accepts IDN names for Danish, Hungarian, Icelandic, Korean (Hangul), Latvian, Lithuanian, Polish and Swedish. These new IDNs will be available on a "first come first serve basis". Since spring 2007 Spanish Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) are available for org-domains.
