Ibn Kathir tafseer .

As for Allah's statement,

(and then He rose over (Istawa) the Throne) the people had several conflicting opinions over its meaning. However, we follow the way that our righteous predecessors took in this regard, such as Malik, Al-Awza`i, Ath-Thawri, Al-Layth bin Sa`d, Ash-Shafi`i, Ahmad, Ishaq bin Rahwayh and the rest of the scholars of Islam, in past and present times. Surely, we accept the apparent meaning of, Al-Istawa, without discussing its true essence, equating it (with the attributes of the creation), or altering or denying it (in any way or form). We also believe that the meaning that comes to those who equate Allah with the creation is to be rejected, for nothing is similar to Allah,

(There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearer, the All-Seer.) ﴿42:11﴾ Indeed, we assert and affirm what the Imams said, such as Nu`aym bin Hammad Al-Khuza'i, the teacher of Imam Al-Bukhari, who said, "Whoever likens Allah with His creation, will have committed Kufr. Whoever denies what Allah has described Himself with, will have committed Kufr. Certainly, there is no resemblance (of Allah with the creation) in what Allah and His Messenger have described Him with. Whoever attests to Allah's attributes that the plain Ayat and authentic Hadiths have mentioned, in the manner that suits Allah's majesty, all the while rejecting all shortcomings from Him, will have taken the path of guidance.''d is Allah, the Lord of all that exists!)

surah taha 20 , ibn kathier

(The Most Gracious Istawa the Throne.) A discussion concerning this has already preceded in Surat Al-A`raf, so there is no need to repeat it here. The safest path to take in understanding this, is the way of the Salaf (predecessors). Their way was to accept that which has been reported concerning this from the Book and the Sunnah without describing it, reinterpreting it, resembling it to creation, rejecting it, or comparing it to attributes of the creatures. Concerning Allah's statement,

(To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth, and all that is between them, and all that is under the soil.) This means all of this is owned by Him and in His grasp. It is all under His control, will, intent and judgement. He created all of this, He owns it and He is the God of all of it. There is no true God other than He and no Lord other than He. Concerning Allah's statement,

(and all that is under the soil.) Muhammad bin Ka`b said, "This means that which is beneath the seventh earth.

  • Prophet Muhammad, peace be on him, said: أَلاَ تَأْمَنُونِي وَأَنَا أَمِينُ مَنْ فِى السَّمَاءِ، يَأْتِينِي خَبَرُ السَّمَاءِ صَبَاحًا وَمَسَاءً “Don't you trust me, when I am the trustee of the One Who is above the heaven, and the news of heaven comes to me morning & evening?” ♦ Transmitted by Bukhari (4351) & Muslim (1064).

And Prophet Muhammad also said: ارحموا من في الأرض يرحمكم من في السماء “Show mercy to those who are on earth so that the One Who is above heaven will show mercy to you.”

  • >> And Imam Adh-Dhahabi (who was from the teachers of the teachers of Al-Hafizh Ibn Hajar Al-'Asqalaani) said, commenting on this report: هذا صحيح ثابت عن ابن المبارك، وأحمد رضي الله عنهما

This is saheeh [authentic] and proven from ‘Abdullah ibn Al-Mubaarak and Imam Ahmad (may Allah be pleased with them both).

    End quote.

♣ From his book: Al-‘Arsh [The Throne], 2/189

  • It is proven that ‘Ali ibn Al-Hasan ibn Shaqeeq, the SHAYKH of Imam Al-Bukhari, said:

I said to ‘Abdullah ibn Al-Mubarak: How do we know our Lord?

He said: على السماء السابعة على عرشه "He is above the seventh heaven above His Throne, and we do not say as the Jahmiyyah do, that He is here on earth."

That was mentioned to Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal, and he said: هكذا هو عندنا "This is Exactly how we understand it."

  • Even Pharaoh, the enemy of God, who disputed with Moses about his Lord, told his minister Haamaan: يا هامان ابن لي صرحا لعلي ابلغ الأسباب أسباب السماوات فأطلع إلى إله موسى "Haamaan! Build me a tower that I may arrive at the ways of the heavens, and I may then look upon the God of Moses..." [40:36-37]

He knew in his heart of hearts that Allah is above, as He stated: "And they belied the clear evidences wrongfully & arrogantly, although their own (inner) selves were convinced thereof !" [27:14]

  • There should be no dispute that man instinctively knows that Allah is above heaven. Whenever something overwhelming befalls a person, and he turns to Allah for help, he looks towards heaven, not in any other direction. But it is strange that those who deny that Allah is above His creation still raise their hands in supplication to no other direction than towards heaven.

  • An example of an approval of Prophet Muhammad (عليه السلامُ) which indicates that Allah is exalted and high, is the Hadith concerning the young slave girl, to whom the Prophet (Peace & Blessings of Allah be upon Him) said: أين الله؟ "Where is Allah?" She said: "Above heaven" -- and in some narrations, she simply pointed upwards! ♦ He then asked, من أنا؟ "Who am I?" She said, "The Messenger of Allah." So he said to her master: أعتقها، فإنها مؤمنة "Set her free, for she is definitely a believer."

  • This young girl was uneducated, as many are, and she was a slave, but she knew that her Lord is above heaven. Some misguided "educated" people deny that Allah is above heaven, and say, "He is neither above nor below; neither to the right nor to the left. He is everywhere!"

  • i can put 50 hadith and 5 ayats according to this topic. U can't be that stupid
