Huge fantastic working model in USNA museum, Annapolis MD, actually runs (external power for demo.) This large, infinitely intricate scale model engine was used to train midshipmen during the 19th C. It would fit in about a 30-inch cube, just to give you an idea of its size.

  • sad it dosnt actualy run off steam any more

  • Now that the museum refurbishment has been completed, the running has been disabled and it is a static display only.

  • is that actualy runing on steam or electric motors?

  • Electric now for demonstration. I'm sure it ran on live steam back when it was built.

  • you know of where one could aquire plans to build one of these engines for use with a remote control paddle steamer?

  • Sorry I don't but there are a lot of resources available thru "Home Shop Machinist" such as plans etc. Put an ad in there or read back issues to see who is really into old steam engines, and ask 'em.

  • @DocterJones That will be a large model and their aren't many gas boilers in that large of a scale so you'll have to convert a coal boiler... at least at that scale you can put a car battery in and never worrie about it dying for a few years. ;) I have up at the smokstak . com forums a links page under scale model engineering it has all the links I found. It easy to spot with the Green smiley face lol.

  • @DocterJones Well casting kit means their unmachined casting, like a clay pot in the general shape but not refined. You need a metal lathe and a milling machine to make them a working engine, you can always have a company do it for you at an extra price...

  • @DAKOTA56777 that would be quite the christmas gift. They do look like really great models, and for reasonable prices. I wonder if their castings kit....the top price option gives you all machined parts...Personally I would just want the drawings, and either build it myself, or if i don't have the shop to do it, find someone with impeccable shop skills to build for me...I wanna put one of these in a rc general slocum.

  • @DocterJones If your still looking the closest to this engine would be at this site: w w w .historicmodelsandreproductions . com/ (Take spaces out if you don't already know.) Larger size too at 41" high, I plan on annoying my parents to get this as my one and only x-mas gift for 2011. :3

  • Why is this called a 'walking beam' and not just a beam engine?

  • @cannonmn

    fore save electric power ?

  • A lot of excess info.

"The beam walks.... And the wheel goes round and round..."

  • This is the same steam engine the S.S. New Jersey (later renamed the Republic) had at the time she sank in a storm in 1865. the engine siezed and the ship was doomed
