Les Poètes Maudits

'Poète Maudit' (French: "accursed poet"), in literary criticism, the poet as an outcast of modern society, despised by its rulers who fear his penetrating insights into their spiritual emptiness. The phrase was first applied by Paul Verlaine in 'Les Poètes maudits' (1884), a collection of critical and biographical studies that focused on the tragedy of the lives of the then little-known Symbolist poets Tristan Corbière, Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam, Stéphane Mallarmé, and Arthur Rimbaud. Verlaine may have taken les poètes maudits from Baudelaire's "Bénédiction," in which a poet is described as untouched by the suffering and contempt he experiences. The term carries the implication of the low estate into which the poet has fallen from his ancient position as seer and prophet.

'I poeti maledetti' è il titolo che Paul Verlaine dette alla sua opera uscita nella sua prima edizione nel 1884 e comprendente alcune tra le migliori opere di Tristan Corbière, Arthur Rimbaud e Stéphane Mallarmé. In seguito nel 1888 uscì una edizione rinnovata nella quale l'autore aggiunse anche le opere di Marceline Desbordes-Valmore, Villiers de l'Isle-Adam e Pauvre Lelian - anagramma dello stesso Paule Verlaine in un suo tentativo di restare in anonimato. La scelta di ampliare l'opera è da alcuni criticata in quanto si accusa l'autore di far venire così a mancare l'incisività che caratterizzava l'opera originale. Ma a Verlaine va riconosciuto senz'altro il grande merito grazie a quest'opera di aver reso celebri autori che altrimenti sarebbero senz'altro rimaste figure misconosciute. Verlaine stesso spiega che per "poeti maledetti", intende "poeti assoluti", "assoluti per l'immaginazione, assoluti nell'espressione".
Si nota subito in questa scelta l'assenza di Charles Baudelaire ma la sua esclusione è giustificata dal raggruppamento degli autori in un arco di tempo ristretto in cui essi operarono, periodo che trova il suo baricentro nel 1873 anno in cui appaiono 'Una stagione all'inferno' di Rimbaud e 'Gli amori gialli' di Corbière.

Thank you, dear friend, for this wonderful video on poets from France; i think that poets of all countries are in fact "accursed": being an artist is often being outside of the common morality and laws, just because we see tthe word with an "other eye" i''s not a choice, may be a curse, but we are born like this...
