I think that you could never ever understand his motives or intentions unless you were in his shoes. Our mind is incapable of understand situations or scenarios that are beyond our experience. I do understand that you say nothing could justify his actions, however insanity really does that to people. Why else do we have asylums? Why are people who are mentally unstable tried differently than others? It's because they are not rational in their decisions as in they are not thinking straight.
