I'd be interested to have informations about the future events of the 150th anniversary of the Underground on Jan. 2013. If anybody have heard about something, please let me know. I plan to be on Paddington or Farringdon St platforms on Jan 10, 2013 the same day it opened in 1863.

All the white arches were ventilation shafts when it opened in 1863, providing light from the street to the platforms which were lightened only by gas lamps at that time.
Many years after they closed the shafts when it was electrified. The original arches remains on the platforms, nearly after 150 years!

@LondonUnderground186 Yes I have seen these arches at Baker Street and wondered about them but thought nothing more about it. Now they are explained. Thank you. Excellent information.

@JackBarnett21 You're welcome! I'm a huge enthusiast about the London Underground, collecting mainly maps. I actually own over 250 original maps from 1879 to July 2010!

@LondonUnderground186 Wow - so did you complain when the talked about taking the Thames off The Map. They have never really diven the author / artist enough glory for his efforts have they.

@kaiyan246 through this station the first underground train in the world ran. Since this was around one hundred and fifty years ago it is unlikely that that train going through was the actual 'first train in the world'. Do you ever get very far when you make these kind of demands from people. Best wishes Jack
