I think the Canterbury sound is more about the essence of the music than an actual connection to Canterbury itself.. For me, the Canterbury sound is a combination of elements which include but aren't exclusive to absurdity, improvisation and the ability to push boundaries of convention. Also lyrical honesty and of course strong hints of psychedelia. I do however agree that your two album examples are the epitome of the Canterbury sound :)
c'est totalement bluffant de penser que ce clip a 40 ans!!!!çà aurait pu etre enregistré maintenant, çà n'a pas pris une ride et ils pourraient même encore donner des leçons à beaucoup!!!
The more you see and hear of all the drummers that played with Gong, the more obvious it becomes how perfect Pierre Moerlin was in that role. All the players that made up the 'Angels Egg' Gong were born to play in that group !
@terrypussypower ...sure sure ... I think you're right ... I think this video shows perfectly the Canterbury's component of Daevid ... but ... if you mention Caravan and Hartfield .. well .. nothing to say about it! thanks for your post! ; )
@MONSTERGIANNETZ I think you're a wee bit out in your assessment of the 'Canterbury' sound. The only link to Canterbury is through Daevid Allen and Soft Machine, and of all the bands linked by Wilde Flowers, Gong are the least 'Canterbury of them all ! The epitome of the 'Canterbury' sound would be Caravan's 'In The Land of Grey and Pink' or Hatfield and the North's 'Rotters' Club' .
This is great. Emotional. Am I only Dreaming it?

As a huge Gong fan since the 70's, this is of huge historical importance. These guys were and were not, messing around, musically.
What a fantastic post! I can't believe I missed this at the time!
