  • when you say talk to veterans you mean talk to recent veterans right? if i talked to a 50year old veteran it wouldnt apply to new recruits because just about every single thing has changed in every branch over the past 20+years. more pay, more jobs, more benefits, high bonus, schooling possibilities, and even a whole different area of combat locations in the middle east as opposed to vietnam and jungle areas. even the uniforms are different.

  • @0587dave

Very good point, but the basics haven't changed much.

  • go for OCS(officer Candidate School) You get so many more benfits being an officer. Starting out you will make about $500 more a month, plus the other benefits

  • You're right about being an officer. It is the better way to go.if at possible

  • as soon as i graduate highschool Would it be better to enlist and then get my masters while I am enlisted, then at the end of my contract apply for OCS, or go to college without enlisting and then apply for OCS. Im thinking number one, because the GI Bill will help for college, and I will have a steady income and housing. The downside would be being stationed somewhere where college is not an option or being deployed while serving my active duty.

  • My suggestion would be to get your education first. Even though being enlisted would add to your experiences, I don't know if you would have time for school. When I reenlisted to go to Germany I was told that there were college courses taught on every Kaserne. That was true, but between going to the field and other things there wasn't time.

Getting your education first will open a lot more doors than being enlisted. Please go to school first. T

  • @Acaciavet An educated(partially at least), knowledgeable, and fully professional enlisted force is the real strength of our military. The junior enlisted, and to a greater extent NCOs, are perfectly capable of doing many important jobs without the intervention of commissioned officers. Most officer capacities are simply taskmasters or overseers, just to make sure that the "machine" runs, smoothly or otherwise. Essentially, commissions are only good for more money!

  • This Coast Guardsman says go for it and stay for 20.I know more enlisted men that have more brains in there pockets then most officers. Those 90 wonders are dangerouse.

  • @diverkev actually if your talking about the army the basics have changed. the whole PT program, bayonet training is gone, range qualifications are different, more weeks of training... all kinds of stuff has changed just within the past year

  • @diverkev the Marines added the crucible which not many people had a long time ago and the army is recently making huge changes like taking out bayonet training and distance runs and changing it to focused sprint work and stuff those are just a few of the major changes. i dont know alot about the Marines but i know all the differences i had in the army in 2005 from when my dad went in and all the big changes since i have been out in 2008

  • I have to say this video is amazing. I'm wanting to join the Marines. And this video helped out a ton, Thank you.

  • in my opinion, talk to non recruiters, people in infantry, aviation etc depending on wat you wanna do

  • no one should want to join the military
