ftlauddentist: Didn`t your curriculum involve the potential of stochastic effects due to x-ray exposure? Biologic harmful effects doesn`t have to be directly dose-related. The use of a lead collar/apron is a necessity. There is no evidence to conclude that dental x-ray is completely safe. To act otherwise is quite irresponsible. Thumbs up for the posts of cheezumdvcc and AbtinX.

Swedish law demands you use thyroid collars to protect thyroidea from radiation, digital xray or not.

You are NOT going to the wrong dentist if they place a lead apron and thyroid collar on you. You are actually going to a dentist that cares about you and wants to help you avoid scattered radiation no matter how minimal it might be. If I went to a dentist that did not provide the extra safety of an apron and collar I would be going to the wrong dentist.

@bankruptcyflorida if you have a full set of x-rays done every 2 years (18 film) with the old style, you should be ok

I had no idea that the old dental x-ray equipment was so bad. I should have known when the dentist leaves the room and drapes an lead apron over my body. Now what about the x-rays shooting into my head, that can't be good can it? My Fort Lauderdale office is very close to your dental office, I'll see you soon.
I went to my local Dentist, I was given a referral to to be x-rayed without actually seeing a dentist, the reception got the dentist to sign the referral form without even see me, it was my first ever visit. Ionizing radiation (including x-rays) is dangerous, background radiation is everywhere, however medical radiation is on top of this and radiation damage is accumulative.

We agree. This is why we invest in tecnology to use the minimal amount of radiation possible to keep our patients safe.
