On Thursday, August 11, Philadelphia independent mayoral candidate Diop Olugbala held a press conference outside City Hall to respond to Mayor Nutter's announced escalation of aggressive police action targeting black youth, including 9pm curfews with threats of fines and jail time for youth and parents. Olugbala discussed his campaign's approach to the crisis of poverty and youth unemployment including the formation of a Youth Commission to develop a positive program to solve the issues facing the youth of Philadelphia. Members of the Youth Commission, including former boxer Simon "One Punch" Carr, were introduced at the press conference.
