On the 15th of March 2009, the European Union hands over its military missionin Chad and the Central African Republic to the United Nations, in accordance with UN Security Council resolution 1834. MINURCAT serves as the umbrella organization for the military, police and justice activities of the United Nations in Chad. It also seeks to improve human rights and to reinforce local administration. France, Poland and Ireland will maintain their military presence in Chad with MINURCAT, while some participants in the EUFOR mission, like Slovenia, Spain and the Netherlands, will leave Chad after the handover. Of the 3360 EUFOR troops, some 2000 will become UN peacekeepers.
