Blue Velvet Blues
Director's Statement: We wanted to do a psychological and visual interpretation for the 20th Anniversary Blue Velvet Festival (2006) being held at Jengo's Playhouse in Wilmington, NC, the city where it was originally filmed. We went to the same locations in order to pick up on any residual vibrations still left over from Blue Velvet and David Lynch. We got some great performances from the actors who for the most part were infants when this unique film first came out. Blue Velvet Blues is meant as a non-narrative tribute to the director, the cast, and especially, Isabella Rossellini. At one point we were given some great original Blues music to work with so the movie and the music melted together. On the style, I decided to use a conceptual approach combining fictitious scenes between the director and cast during production. We imagined a dreamscape of possibilities that may have happened in the ultra creative mind of the director. Most people believe that it's about the finished film and that's valid but to me it's also about the moment of creating art. It had to be an interesting set working with such a talented group. I know I had a blast working with our small ensemble and crew.
