A look at the lives of African Americans in US suburbs touches on social integration, economic opportunity and jazz music.

This story of race and real estate chronicles the migration of Blacks from the cities to the suburbs since the Civil Rights revolution of the 1960s.

The neighboring towns of East Orange - almost entirely African American - and South Orange - balanced among several ethnic groups - New Jersey, offer several interesting comparisons and contrasts, especially in today's era of the sub-prime lending crisis.

The mostly African Amercian East Orange has very high rates of foreclosures, many of them the product of predatory lending practices.

The well integrated South Orange remains a model of harmony among races, and greater opportunities for building wealth.

Whenever we hear news about blacks in general, it's always, 'poor blacks'. I guess this buoys the self-esteem of the many poor whites who need to believe that, although they may be poor, at least it's not as bad as being black. This also caters to poor blacks that use discrimination to justify where they are.

Don't tell us, tell the rich White people that control the media. The problem is instead of these poor Whites pitting the blame on the rich Whites they want to be like so much, they scapegoat Blacks and other minorities.

@walleyrt69. The real reason why black people are moving to the suburbs is because the cities are so corrupt by crime .so some black people move to the suburbs. The only thing is that, for some reasons unknown, the corrupt(ghetto) black people follow them in the hope that they can turn that suburb into a ghetto.

@Drebln893 Here in America,it used to be mostly African Americans in the cities.Now,they are fleeing to the suburbs in droves.Thats because the white girls are crossing with all you folks alot.I know alot of nice African Americans.I just would like them to stay together in the cities like it used to be.I dont like the crossing thing.Its probably because America is so huge and alot of farm land.Have a nice day!

I'm from Canada and I never imagined that there would be price differences in houses specifically related to what ethnicity owned them. Very interesting.

We are free to live where we want in this country. The reason we have poor black areas is due to "progressive" policies of welfare.

True, I live in a small town in the mid-Atlantic and whites left our black and italian neighborhood in the 60's and 70's. Now they are moving back to the very areas they fled!
