On January 22, 2010, Senator Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.) spoke on the Senate floor on the widespread devastation in Haiti, ten days after a deadly earthquake rattled the hemispheres poorest country. Just as Haiti was moving towards political stability and increased economic development, the hope of a new future was buried in rubble. Now is an opportunity to help rebuild Haiti better than it was before. Despite the massive loss of life and the destruction of thousands of homes, the response from around the world has been one of compassion and generosity.
Both Senators from Vermont are brilliant. The only downside to this is that it makes it counterproductive to try and get Howard Dean into the Senate if it means sacrificing Leahy or Sanders. Too bad. Maybe Howard Dean can move to Massachusetts and run there in 2012!

Sen. Patrick Leahy is a good man.
Vermont is very lucky.
If the Senate were full of Patrick Leahy's, the world would be a much better place.
