Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924)
Elégie, Op. 24
Lynn Harrell (b. 1944), cello
Riccardo Chailly (b. 1953), conductor
Radio-Symphonie-Orchester Berlin
Written in 1880.
Recorded in 1984.
ClassicalRecords is a Youtube channel where I upload some excellent performances from the LPs in my collection. I'm uploading these LPs because they are either not available on CD, out of print on CD, or just difficult to find.
@cellodaniel1 The cello is the accompaniment at that point, and holds very little importance. For someone as dynamic as Harrell I think he does a great job in doing so, usually taking things to the extreme. It's time for the winds to come out here...

I think that Lynn Harrell has to play his "Ab Bb Ab Eb" section louder.. I can not hear the cello, only the orchestra

Beautiful. One of the best performances that I heard. Would like to hear the source.

I saw his do a master class 30 years ago at The Henry Wood Hall in Glasgow. It was on the Dvorak Cello Concerto. After the first participant played a section of movement one he spoke about what he'd just heard. Without trying to be showy or discouraging he proceeded to play the opening again in a manner he felt was right. His sound was so large and full against what we had heard up to that point, and got used to, that it seemed unbelievable. It was incredible and I'll never forget it.

This is absolutely superb cello playing. So musically felt.

One of the problems is that the video keeps stalling. That happens sometimes when a YouTube video gets corrupted on the server end.
The performance is excellent, as is to be expected from Mr. Harrell.

well better no comments than all those awful irrelevant bashing comments don't you think?
It's like a gem sitting in an ocean!
and now for my meager comment: Lynn Harrell is so incredible....I grew up with his recordings...the way he plays with time...pushing and pulling the orchestra....it's so masterful.
