It also alows for a cheaper construction of a traner aircraft where, just like you said, if the student pilot fails to lower the gear, not much damage results. Because many times a young Spitfire or Hurri pilot forgot to lower the gear and ruined a very scarce new fighter.

That is how Yak-52's, 18's, 50's, and the nose gear of Nanchang CJ-6's are built. The aircraft can be landed gear up in an emergency with only damage to the wooden prop which due to its construction usually saves the engine.
