Didang from LALAWIGAN. Music & Words by Florante Aguilar. Kristine Sinajon, mezzo-soprano. Florante Aguilar, guitar. Directed by Alleluia Panis. Produced by Fides Enriquez. Live footage by Benito Bautista.
THE CONTEXT:
Didang, as Candida was called by the villagers in her elder days, is now a crazed woman feared by children. There is absolutely no trace of her once youthful beauty. Her name is often invoked by the villagers in the same breath as those of any fabled ghost stories. She is often talked about but seldom seen.
THE SCENE:
Alone in the dark. Didang is sitting on a worn-out sleeping mat. She is wearing Isagani's rosary around her neck. Isagani's dagger can be seen shining on the floor to her left. She is at her darkest hour.
English Translation:
DIDANG
In a stream of bliss
Silk of abundance
Is a shadow
Crawling
A peeping ghost
In the end, I yearn
Of a pain so slow
As I stagger
By the light of the dagger.
I dream of flying
To behold the surrounding
But the long tentacles of gloom
Captured such unbridled ecstasy
The water of the spring
Are like tears dripping
Onto the torn sleeping mat
Ripped apart
Allow me ...
(Raises the dagger as if to kill herself)
Deep within me is revenge
A knot of savagery I must unhinge
To a hundred people, foreign and strange
A dash of poison can be arranged.
ORIGINAL TAGALOG VERSE:
DIDANG
Sa batis ng galak
Sutlang pasasa
Ay aninong
Gumagapang
Multong nanunulyap.
Sa kinalaunan
Kusang umaasam
Ng dusang matumal
Sa kislap ng punyal.
Sa karanasang lumipad
Mamasid ang kapaligiran
Ngunit ang mahabang galamay
Dinakip ang malayang ganyak.
Ang tubig sa batis
Parang luhang tumutulo
Sa sirasirang baníg
At gulagulanit
Pahintulutan...
Taglay sa loob ay paghigantihan
Ang sandaang katao, humigit kulang
Nagwari-wari't sumulingsuling
Yaring humahanap ng tunguhin.
Sa kinalaunan ...
