The math teacher at a tough East Los Angeles high school who inspired the movie "Stand and Deliver," has died. He was 79.A family friend says Jaime Escalante died Tuesday in Reno, Nev., where he was undergoing treatment for bladder cancer.
An immigrant from Bolivia, he transformed Garfield High School by motivating struggling students to tackle and excel at advanced math and science. The school had more Advanced Placement calculus students than all but three other public high schools in the country.
Edward James Olmos played Escalante in the film based on his story.
Olmos says Escalante proved that inner city students can perform at the highest levels, and left an important legacy for American education.

March 30, 2010 | 5:07 pm
Legendary Garfield High School math teacher Jaime Escalante, who was immortalized in the film "Stand and Deliver," died Tuesday afternoon after battling cancer.
Escalante died at 2:27 p.m. at the home of his son, Jaime Jr., in Roseville, Calif., said actor Edward James Olmos, who portrayed Escalante in the film.
"He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren," said Olmos, who drove Escalante from a Reno hospital Monday night to Roseville.
Olmos said he was notified by the family several minutes after Escalante died.
Escalante, 79, helped turn the math program at the East Los Angeles high school into one of the top programs in the nation.
A full obituary will be published shortly.Jaime didnt just teach math. Like all great teachers, he changed lives, said Edward James Olmos in a special appeal for Escalante. He says Escalante had love and dedication for all of his inner-city students and thought that each of his students was gifted. Olmos, who played the role of Escalante (Kimo) in the film, says that under the teaching of Escalante, Gang members became aerospace engineers. Kids who had spent their youth convinced their lives didnt matter discovered they were leaders.
Cast members as well as Olmos have put together a fundraiser to help Escalante and his family with further treatments. Vanessa Marquez, a cast member of Stand and Deliver said in an interview that $5,000 has been raised, but $25,000 is still needed.
[Lets] make his final days as comfortable as possible—and maybe even give him a chance to beat the cancer, said Olmos.

  • Awesome words! He WAS a hero to SO MANY!

  • DISCOSEAN21 - lol

  • Great job on sending out your wishes to Jaime's family. I've been a fan of "Stand and deliver" since my junior year of high school.

And even though I didn't have a chance to meet Jamie in person or write to him, I'll always have a special place in my heart for him. Especially after hearing what he did to motivate his students, and to let them know they can do anything they dream of doing.

Did you ever have a chance to meet Jamie? And if so, I'll bet he was very nice.

  • @chingon711 here on YouTube $2.99, they use to have it for free.

  • @combo360 stop being an ass, he is talking to a lot of the young people who went to high school in the late 2000s who are not familiar with the movie Stand and Deliver.

  • wow! i just finished watching the movie today with my english class. i luved it sooo much!! wow im shocked, and soo is my teacher going to be when i tell her.

  • R.I.P Mr. Escalante! Thumbs up if you believe we need more teachers like this great man! What I find sickening is that so many people were against his teaching methods, and they got their panties in a bunch when his class sizes exceeded the 35 student limit! Let me tell you something. There should be no limit to the number of successful students!

  • Just heard that Jaime Escalante died. Such an inspirational story captured beautifully in the movie (one of my favourites). Enjoyed your tribute. Sean. High fives from across the pond. :) RIP Jaime.
