Only 3 weeks of learning this song. I took my first drum lesson just under 3 months ago with a most awesome drum instructor, Dave Plesh ('Drummer Dave' on facebook). I chose this as my third song to learn just because I just love Gn'R!! The toughest part for me is from 5:14 to 5:40. I always tense up! I'm still working on all three songs. :-)

  • For three months playing that is excellent. There are no quater notes in this song on the hat or the ride but you can get away with playing them on the ride during the parts he is using the bell. Try working on just learning the main beat of the song correctly then work on smoothing it out. Also on the build ups use your snare and your floor tom not your tom and floor tom. Good job! ;)

  • @Hammerhead786 Thank you for your comment! I was debating on that, but I saw in many tabs and also on the full score sheets that the verse and other parts are played in 1/4 notes. But on youtube I saw people doing 1/8 notes. I found a video of Steven Adler playing this song with 1/4 notes, so I decided I should do that, too. This was actually very hard for me because all the patterns I have learned have been in 1/8 notes. Took a lot of effort to re-train myself to do 1/4 notes. :)

  • @margott1 I'll bet you are talking about the Adler video where he is in a night club playing to his record for a crowd (drums only, no band). Then you could get away with quarter notes and have it sound full because the original recording is blaring along with the song and so is the original drumming. The parts on the ride bell your playing an accented note on the bell and a light note on the ride, 1/8 notes. I know what you mean about 1/4' notes. They can be tricky esp with complex pedal work.

  • @Hammerhead786 Yes, that was the video I was talking about. :-) Thank you for the video link! I will train myself to hit an accented note on the bell and the bounce on the ride. A new skill to learn! :-)

  • @Hammerhead786 And by the way, I took your advice and started playing both snare, floor tom, but I'm also adding the bass drum for the build ups. The music sheets call for the bass drum, I was just giving myself a chance to learn the other parts first. My leg is still getting used to move to the tempo, but I'm getting there! :-) I wish I started learning this when I was younger! ;-)

  • @margott1 Yes, I almost always use the bass drum for the build up too. The only thing is if you are off at all it will show big time with the bass drum included. I will send you link to swet child that will help you a lot. Even though you didn't start when you were young you have natural ability and desire so you'll still be able to accomplish a lot! Rock On!!
