DMs should be good in defending. Mikel is strong in that area. But a top team will need midfielders that can turn defend into attack in an instance, a deep lying playmaker you can call it. The modern day midfielder needs to offer a lot more than just their primary duty, especially in the premier league and in a club like Chelsea. Even Luiz, Cahill and JT are making attacking runs. By deploying a DM capable of attacking doesn't mean we compromise the defence.

Mikel doesn't need to contribute so much too much going forward because most of the time there will be four other midfielders that will. Mikel wins and helps keep the ball, because that's his job as a defensive midfielder and thats the 2 in the 4-2-3-1. He'll be defensive and try to keep the ball and Romeu does the same. Lampard and Essien will most likely go forward from defensive midfield, but If both DMFs go forward that defeats the purpose of making them DMFs.

remembered what cech said? the outfield players loses the ball too easily, which is why we cannot attack and our defence got exposed by counter attacks.
ramires's not a technical player. mikel doesn't contribute much going forward. meireles very inconsistent. malouda overzealous. the only top midfielders that we have are just essien and lampard.
unless the youths are ready, otherwise we should sign another midfielder to ease the transition.

Frankly I believe Benayoun and Malouda's gonna leave. Meireles is decent but not consistent enough. That leaves us with primarily the DMs Romeu, Mikel, Essien and then Lamps and Ramires.
We need midfielders that can control the midfield and link up play to fully bring out the potential of our attacking players. Other than Lamps and Essien, we don't really have such a player. Injury to either of them will cause serious problems.

and at the present time Chelsea have a good squad and don't need another midfield signing.

looking to the future without doing enough for the present is just as dumb too, proven by Arsene Wenger and AVB.

Mikel has played very well under RDM and Romeu is also a good player. and even if you feel McEachran isn't good enough now by the time Lampard has retired he'll be a great player. Buying players when young produced players are close to reaching the first team squad is foolish.

he's not ready yet. meireles isn't good enough, benayoun's over 30 as well. We need a good young CM. So far only Ramires.
