Artist Statement:
Through direct and candid imagery, my work illustrates themes of advertising and propaganda within the context of a common everyday occurrence, dental hygiene. Satisfying the visual nature of the human psyche, I immediately attract attention through the introduction of repetition and color. Due to the highly commercialized dental industry, its history within the American culture and phrases that appeal to hope for a whiter, brighter smile, dental hygiene offers an excellent platform to demonstrate the concepts of my work.
With the use of materials such as fabrics, inks, and plaster, I mimic flags, poster ads, and toys that clutter our lives. I also repeat catch phrases and the red, white, and aqua color scheme common to the dental hygiene industry. By producing multiples, through processes such as printmaking, I hope to spread my work in the same way advertisements infiltrate our everyday lives.
The bombardment of advertisements and repetitious images inspires the basis of my work; in particular, subject matter that relates to social behavior and appearance, such as dental hygiene. Comparable to many of lifes conflicts, dental hygiene may not be a priority, but it is often imperative for survival and through advertisement and propaganda, people are inspired to act.
The real darkness is that kids for decades were being programmed to ingest additional fluoride 3 times a day. Aparently the tainted water supply wasn't dumbing them down quite enough.
