Well, not quite, but 22 years and 363 days.

I made it early, because I obviously don't want to be in the kitchen all day on Monday, and tomorrow's not good, either. My in-laws were absolutely appalled that I made my own birthday cake, but it's what I want to do for a living. Y'know? It's like letting someone else make your wedding gown if you're a fashion designer.

I had originally started to plan this cake waaaay back in January for a friend of mine's birthday later this year, but between Meleé and Brawl, he switched from maining Kirby to Pikachu, so... something else, I guess. I've got a few months to come up with another idea.

All in all, I'm pretty pleased with how this came out considering I did everything but the baking today in like, three hours. He could've come out a lot smoother if I'd done him in fondant, but I've yet to find a fondant I can tolerate the taste of save for marshmallow cream (can't take regular marshmallow fondant, as it contains gelatin, which makes me and the piggies cry), and I've tried covering ball cakes with it before (see: Deathstar disaster), and it's way too heavy for regular cake to support without a bajillion dowels and support straws and cardboard, and I just didn't want to fuss with it.

So here's Kirby, my Brawl main, done in strawberry cheesecake-flavored cake with strawberry vanilla whipped buttercream icing. Fondant cake board accents, fondant party hat, and fondant facial features. As I usually like to aim for, everything is edible except for the toothpick supports holding his arms up, and of course, the candles.

  • wait, I thought you didn't use fondant because of the gelatin?

  • I don't use traditional marshmallow fondant because of the gelatin. Wilton rolled fondant, which is certified kosher, I simply don't use on personal cakes because it's nasty.

  • Oh! I had no idea Wilton was kosher! Are you vegan or just steering away from the gross gelatin?:) Your cake is SOOO cute. I am with you on the taste of Wilton, which I generally steer away from if I have to cover a cake completely....ad then I go for the marshmallow, which tastes SOOO much better.

  • I'm not vegan, but I'm pollotarian. I avoid gelatin because I like pigs.
