Tenth of selected excerpts from 'Orfeo ed Euridice' staged at Glyndebourne, 1982. In which we find Orfeo, unable to explain why he cannot look upon Euridice until they get past the labyrinthine cave, is tormented by Euridice's rejection and desire to stay in Hades - dead once more - rather than live without her husband's love. Unable to control himself any longer, Orfeo turns to look at his wife, and....well, go watch the video and find out what happens next.
(§•§•§• THIS SCENE is one of the most profoundly moving to watch in all of opera, thanks to the emotional and dramatic commitment of Dame Janet Baker to the role and to the opera •§•§•§)
(Only selected scenes will be uploaded from this fine production. Rest will follow soon....)
The great British mezzo-soprano, Dame Janet Baker, sings the role of Orfeo with heartbreaking sincerity in this Glyndebourne staging (by Peter Hall). These performances were the singer's farewell to the operatic stage. Not to be missed !

Più non resisto:

Amata sposa!

alzandosi con forza e tornando a cadere
Io moro...

Dove trascorsi, ohimè, dove mi spinse
Un delirio d'amor!..
le si accosta con fretta
Sposa!... Euridice!...
la scuote
Euridice!... diletta! Ah più non m'ode,
Ella è spenta per me! Misero! ed io,
Io fui che morte a lei recava! Oh legge
Spietata! quel martir al mio somiglia!
n questa ora funesta
Sol di morir con te, lasso! mi resta!

Che farò senza Euridice?
Dove andrò senza il mio ben?
Euridice!... Oh Dio! Rispondi!

Più soccorso, più speranza,
Né dal mondo, né dal ciel!
Che farò senza Euridice?
Dove andrò senza il mio ben?

Ma finisca, e per sempre,
Colla vita il dolor! Del nero Averno
Sono ancor sulla via: lungo cammino
Non è quel che divide
Il mio bene da me.
M'aspetta, ombra adorata! Ah, questa volta
Senza lo sposo tuo non varcherai
L'onde lente di Stige! Io sfido, o Numi,
Sin il vostro poter!

One of the world's most radiant
singing actresses of any Age!
Dame Janet completely dissolves
into the role of Orfeo and sings as
if the character she inhabits is her
own life! Love the cool deus ex
machina! Thank you for posting
this priceless performance!

Wish I could give this *two* thumbs up! One can't express it better than you have, C! It is such a relief, though, after such a tormented journey for Orfeo (beautifully, painfully rendered by Dame Janet) - the happy ending that Gluck decided to go with here!
Thanks for the view and comment!

Thank you so much for posting this scene! To say Baker was one of my all-time favorite singers, and models, is putting it lightly. Besides vocal beauty, she knew how to ride the raw edge of passion without ever losing vocal control, as few singers ever master. I have a framed b&w photo on my studio wall of the final scene here with Orfeo facing Amor, which she signed for me after her last Carnegie Hall recital. I've heard the scene on recording but have never seen it before. Mille grazie!

Hello, LadyWoodlark! Thank you for the lovely comment!
If you haven't noticed yet, I've been putting up loads of videos of/about Dame Janet - I'm a fan of very recent vintage - so I've been busily trying to promote her recordings on YouTube. (Check out my uploads.) I've got all the 'Orfeo' scenes with her posted, and 'Mary Stuart' at ENO still a work in progress, besides assorted music videos. Hope you like them!
How nice to meet another Dame Janet admirer! :)

I am so glad you got to view this excerpt, which tears at your heart like few other scenes in opera can. Dame Janet is unsurpassed in the role of Orfeo, I think!
Thank you for the view, and the kind words, Tita!
