Hello. I was referring to the last sentence of my first comment. The danish anime is called "Walhalla" in german or "Valhalla" in english.
Perhaps it's more interesting to watch in german because of Christopher Lee. It has its weaknesses in storytelling but overall great voice actors and a lot of links to norse mythology.
At amazon.de they sell it for 4 euros, but i don't want to know the shipping costs to australia. ;p

The Last Unicorn is also one of my favorite anime. As you said it is quite popular in germany and every year at christmas time it is usually broadcasted on tv. When i was a child i didn't know Christopher Lee was voicing King Haggard. His dark and sad voice was perfectly suited for Haggard and he did a great job. It's a pity he didn't voice Saruman in the german dub of LotR. But then he dubbed Odin and Thor in the german version of "Walhalla", a danish anime, released in 1986.

Your videos make me curious, what do you do exactly (professionally that is)?

Christopher Lee is so cool. I absolutely loved Astrid Lindgren's book "Mio min Mio" as a child, and when Lee played the part of Kato in the movie adaptation ("Mio in the Land of Faraway") he managed to magically match my imagination. I only recently learned that he voiced the German part of King Haggard himself. I gotta get the hold of the book if you say it's that good. Books & films are such a good means to learning a foreign language. Thanks for the recommendation!

I have read the Neverending Story but it was so long ago now and I was so young it really is time to re-read it, hehe! One can never have too many book recommendations :)
I can recommend the anime to you. Maybe it's not as magical as the Last Unicorn but a great mixture of good entertainment and nordic mythology. Thanks for the book recommendations, guess i have to put them on my todo list ;). By the way i use the same method as you to study foreign languages. Some day I am hopefully able to speak and write a few sentences in japanese. But I am not sure if watching anime in japanese with english subtitles will lead to much success in the end. :P

I first saw the film two years ago and I loved it!
I've been looking for the book since then, but have yet to find it (I could buy it online somewhere easily, but for some reason I often tend to feel like I'm "giving up" if I don't buy from a regular store).
I've actually got an idea floating around my mind for a fantasy story based on the style of the film (I assume the book is similar, as the author wrote the screenplay, I think).

Yes the film follows the book quite closely, leaving out only a bit of the background stories of Schmendrick, Lir and Haggard. The speech patterns and dialogue of the characters is very similar - one of the reasons I enjoy the film so much! =)
