the test flights were needed to pave the way for this mission Apollo 11 with out them Apollo 11 would not have a way to land on the Moon.

@japeter777 but remember that the Apollo missions were fueled by the cold war. If it were not for the rivalry between the USSR and USA. most of what we see probably wouldn't of existed.

cant believe this all happened in the 60's... we can do this again but go alot farther if we spent our money on space exploration and we were not distracted by war.
