The people of Derby could have their revenge on polling day. At Boston in Lincolnshire The entire council was voted out of office at the last local elections because they had consistantly refused to apply for a bypass for the town.

The official stsement is that "the building collapsed whilst repair woork was being carried out by the owner's contractor". I don't know how a court will describe this, but "Collapse"? Please - an enforcement order to restore the building is still waiting in the wings, if the Derby City Council has the courage to carry it out and force the owner to rebuild.
-
It will be gone like the Crest Hotel. A listed building in a top residential area. It mysteriously burnt down and is now a housing estate.
-
So THAT'S how you repair a historic building - I'll bear that in mind in the future.
-
it was knocked down with no permition because they didnt ask the council and that its a grade II building

I've not been to Derby for a while, since the early 90's, when St Peter's Street was a road still! I saw the demolition of some fine old factories (Like the one near the Midland Station) and I remember the Hippodrome well, this sort of thing, doesn't surprise me, Cinemas across the country have suffered similar fates, the same bungling obfuscation from councils. Looking at Google Earth today I see Derby is being wrecked at a rate as fast as Coventry in the war! You have my deepest sympathy.

i think derby council should be ashamed of themselves the way they have dealt with the destruction of the hipodrome they should demand its repaired properly not demolished

lovetheskin'.This chap does think he's above the law because he has a fancy barrister.
He had the nerve to bring in a DEMOLITION COMPANY to 'make the roof safe' before council inspectors arrived on site.
You couldn't make this shit up if you tried.
if those walls were as unstable as claimed it would not have taken hit after hit by that massive machine to knock them down, it would have fallen with just one knock

ANOTHER piece of Derby's heritage bites the dust while Derby's 'toytown' council sticks it's head in the sand.
It seems that Derby is 'easy pickings' when it comes to developers moving in just to make a quick profit for themselves.
So congratulations Derby Council. You got exactly what you wanted and sod the people of Derby.
May you get your rewards on polling day.
