The 1930s image is usually one of Bertie Wooster, Art Deco, Jazz and Jollity but for most people life was somewhat different. Hunger, poverty, cold and misery were the order of the day. The National Hunger March of 1934 was condemned by society journalists and Conservatives as a spectacle of misery organised by well-fed Communists. The Federation of British Industries called for drastic reduction in public expenditure and announced that we must "rest content with a standard of life which we can afford" . Meanwhile wealthy British businessmen were making a fortune by helping to supply the German armaments industry, It was clear that there would soon be another war and unemployment would again be considerably reduced.
