Railfanning on Jan 10th 1998, Filmed at Noell St in San Diego...All the cabcars now have new ditchlights

Amtrak San Diegans, Coaster, and a BNSF freight train, Nice Horns!!!

Train #1...The first Southbound San Diegan of the day cruises past Noell St in the rain. Cabcar #9639 leads with a high pitched K5LA when blown softly

Train #2...Northbound San Diegan with F40PH #340

Train #3...Southbound San Diegan passes by with cabcar #9638 on point, A short five car set, normally the san diegans had 6 cars and a lot of times 7

Train #4...F40PH #229 leads a San Diegan with a loud P-series horn!

Train #5...A northbound BNSF freight passes with a Santa Fe red and silver unit leading

Train #6...Southbound Amtrak San Diegan passes with an awesome K5LA on cabcar #9634, notice the cafe horizon car, it was either the San Diego ZOO or Sea World wrap. There were several different companies who elected to advertise via Amtrak back then.

Train #7...F40PH #231, operation lifesaver unit, passes with a Nice sounding K5LA!!

Train #8 & 9...Northbound Coaster crosses Noell with no horn, shortly after a Southbound San Diegan passes by with cabcar #9632 leading.

Thanks for watching!!

  • Why no horn? Are trains allowed not to blow their horn if a train in the opposite direction is coming at a crossing?

  • @mrsabatini No, he should have blown it, some of the Coaster engineers back in the day were pretty soft on the horn.

  • The P5A and RS-3L are beautiful! Thank you for sharing

  • @ocrailfan Thanks!

  • Nice catch! Liked the RS-3L on the Santa Fe unit.

  • Thanks

  • Was this at Washington St.???

  • No prob! :)

  • Well, Amtrak stops at Old town on the weekends coming South. From old town you could take a taxi. Sea World is only about 2-3 miles from Old town

  • Is there a way to get to Sea World via Amtrak or does it not get close enough.

Just wondering since driving 5mph on the 5 S isn't my idea of fun.
