Absolute classic. We've got nobody of his calibre today.

The sneeze at the end it what got me...

You are probably correct in that assumption - a most humble man who NEVER took himself seriously - unlike me, who thought he was THE tops.
The nearest character to him currently is probably Paul Merton.

Don't feel ashamed; it's just something I happened to know and now you know it as well, which puts us on equal footing.
Maybe he would have, maybe he wouldn't have. He might have been bowled over by the offer but-- from everything I've read about him-- felt himself not quite worthy of such a responsibility.

I stand corrected - forever shamed by your superior knowledge. However I think if it had been offered Spike would have told the BBC where to place the part! He could have played William Hartnell but he was too busy playing Spike!!

Not yet; that show was done in 1983 and Spike died in 2002.
He died two days after my grandfather, and I always say that I lost two of my biggest heros in the same week.
