This technique is an outlet from the intense negative thoughts and feelings associated with depression, social anxiety, agoraphobia and panic disorder. It is taking your attention away from the mind (negative thoughts) into the body or the breathing. this technique is just to be aware in a different way.

I know this way of focus your mind on certain parts of you body succesionaly.I do this when I ´run and workout, it helps you to concentrate better, and help you to let go the gard.
