First video of my 240G Lake Tanganyika Tanks with Frontosa after getting my brand new Rebel T1i. As of February 2012, my web site at fmueller.com is back online with lots of info about this tank!

  • My tank has no intention of mimicking any natural habitat. As you correctly pointed out, a Tanganyikan biotope setup for Frontosa would have to be more than 15 meters deep with no plants. I believe it would also have to include huge, rather unattractive boulders, and virtually no light. For my living room, I found this neither practicable nor desirable ;-)

Regarding the current, it is setup not to be disturbing for the Frontosa, but my 2 sump pumps turn over about 3600gph (over 13000 liter).

  • can i mix 1 or more flower horn with 2 frontosa in 55 gallons? they are same size

    reply please

  • @5000carriers Frontosa require a minimum tank length of 6'; that is a 125G tank, and should be kept in groups of at least one male and three females. For more info visit the Frontosa section of Cichlid-forum.

  • Hi, what is that freaky looking fish with a beak (2;00)

  • @Snatcholini - Altolamprologus compressiceps 'Gold Head'. They take forever until they get to this size, so that's a distinguished old gentleman you are calling 'freaky' ;-)

  • i have 2 frontosa. 1 is around 4 inches. he breathes normally. the second is around 6 inches, he breathes fast and he opens his mouth really big. why??

    reply please

  • @3000carriers - the fish could be gasping for air. Do a water change and improve aeration, that is bring more oxygen into the tank. That's just a wild guess though. For better founded advice I need more info. You could also post on cichlid-forum.

  • this is maybe the bes aquarium i ever see (sory for my english im from Croatia) you made me think to get new aquarium . i already have Malawi tank but this is my next project . problem is that in croatia i cant get frontosa F1 . from wich country you are and how much it cost it there if they are f1!

  • @5000carriers I would rather tht you dont

  • No. flower horn is extremely aggressive. It doesn't get along with anyone regardless of size.

  • Hello fmueller1!

Your tank set up is well done, but unfortunately it does not resemble a Tanganyikan biotope at all. It could be for African riverine fish species in a very quiet river section with no current. Cyphotilapia frontosa lives in deeper rocky habitats, more than 15 meters and naturally with no plants. Also your other fish species live in rocky habitats. This is a beautiful collection of Tanganyikan fish species, but this is not the biotope for them.

  • @smog1130 I have the sme with my fronties, their always shy and go very dark when their stressed. If you don't have any caves I suggest you buy a shallow hiding hole that you can see them.
