How fast can a F1 Racecar drive ,there was only one way to find out, to attempt a land speed record on the salt flats of Bonneville in the the USA.
This Clip is the Trailer of the Future /Doc film Bonneville the final run.

This car cost tens of million to develop. A Skoda Octavia production car with some simple mods did 227mph at Bonneville. So another 29mph isn't exactly impressive. Sorry Brackley!

@bittergrapeshape in a word yes teams nowadays in F1 use an Fduct for when they're on the straights, on the straight they want less downforce so they can go faster yet have high downforce in the corners because you cannot have the best of both they've invented this duct which sits on the bonnet the driver can open the duct with his hand from inside the car, this allows air to travel through the duct at high speed and onto the rear wing which reduces downforce, before the corner he closes it.

most tracks are made up of mostly corners and a few straights, f1 teams will set their downforce levels to get the optimum performance from the car, last week for instance jenson buttons mclaren was the slowest on the straights at monza because he had high downforce settings, his teammate had less downforce and could go 15kph faster in the straight, but buttons car could corner faster button qualified 2nd and his teammate qualified in fifth i think. downforce is used for corner speed mostly

@rneoman thx alot for the detailed explanation, so is it that rear wings are ok for short bursts of high speed like f1 racing or drag racing but can have a negative effect when attempting to reach top speed over a relatively long distance?
bittergrapeshape 1 year ago
@bittergrapeshape because the rear wing causes downforce whic will push the car into the ground harder the faster you go ,take the wing off or change the angle of it's plane and you either get rid of downforce or lessen the degree of force this makes theb cars slippier through the air and faster the front wing is also smaller than normal f1 car, a perfect example is with the bugatti veyron SS, if you want to attempt it's top speed you have to retract the rear wing or else it's not possible,

@PistonPL how can a car fly away if it has downforce lol think about it for a second, DOWNFORCE
rneoman 1 year ago
thank you for wasting my time. btw why doesnt this car have the rear wing
bittergrapeshape 1 year ago
this car is NOT FIA legal.
today F1 car probably would fly away due to a downforce on rear wing.
