Yup, there are two in total. Both requires a key.

for the crates, at the beginning of the level, go forback, and you will found some hidden boxes, but be careful not to fall ;)

I hated this level so much!

This level was tough back in the day. Had to jet through the stage making sure Aku Aku doesn't burn out, so it was kinda difficult to make sure you haven't left anything behind.
